What happens when a New York fashion editor decamps to Oakland’s sunny shores? Well, if you’re Melissa Davis, you write a book about it. Davis, who moved to Oakland in 2003 after stints at Harper’s Bazaar and Mademoiselle, compiled 90 of her favorite places (and people) for “This is Oakland,” which came out last month.
She and photographer Kristen Loken illustrate the images and stories that show why it’s become the destination for “what’s next” among the Bay Area’s creative types. In advance of a Sunday book signing at McMullen boutique (at 1235 Grand Ave, Piedmont), we convinced Davis to share some of her favorite style destinations.
